18th Century Toilets/Outhouses.

Actually in some country areas I don't think much has changed in 300 years. We still have an outhouse up at the cottage, & the main house composting toilets are not that much different. When you are off grid and have to supply your own water, modern flush toilets are not an option.

The cottage outhouse.

I've seen photos of old "double-deckers," but I think I'd be concerned about leaks if I was using the lower level! - lol

The user of the lower level would certainly be encouraged to take care of business and not linger any more than necessary!

It reminds me of the story told about Col. Ethan Allan. After the American Revolution, Mr. Allan found himself in London on family business. He was staying at a boarding house, and some of the other boarders thought it would be funny (and show these uppity colonials) what Englishmen thought of Americans in general. So...they put a portrait of General Washington in the outhouse. Ethan refused to rise to the bait, and cleverly turned the tables on the pranksters, by declaring, "He greatly appreciated the gesture of making the 'necessary' more available, since nothing else would make an Englishman move his bowels quicker, than, 'The General's' stern visage!"
