I've often thought that a lens would be a good thing to include in that style compas, but then I guess it wouldn't be authentic.

I guess that is modern thinking Gorges, & a good idea! But in the 18th century they would not see the connection, ie survival fire lighting.
In the 19th century of course the burning glass was added to the tobacco tin for lighting the pipe when the sun was shining. Actually, when I think on it I don't recall having ever seen a period quote re using a reading glass to make fire! More questions!
