17th Century shoes discovered in attic

I assume the ring helped elevate the soles above the residue left by horses and from the contents of chamber pots slung out the windows.

That particular style can often be seen in paintings of 17th C kitchens. They lift the feet above the floor left hot from the cooking fireplace. Gladstone's Land in Lawnmarket, Edinburgh, have a pair in their kitchen dating to about 1620.
