Tools Of The Settlers 2. A Find. Gimlets.

Gimlets are handy tools, they are the hand drill of the 18th century. These tools drill a hole for nails & screws, as some nails tended to split the wood if a hole was not made first. You can also use them for making holes for wooden pegs, so they can be used to make other tools and even repair broken ones including a broken gun stock. They take up little room in your pack, and they are very light.

I was lucky enough to find two different types in my favourite second hand shop today, this is where it pays to do your research so that you recognise a period item when you see it.

These are as was found, and need cleaning. The one on the left also needs straightening.
