I believe there was evidence of Viking dwellings found in Canada which were "sunken" like the building in the video. Also, the last bowl turner at Reading, England had his shop set into the earth if I remember, and that was around 1900 or so when the building was erected (I think).

The Viking huts in Canada are at L'Anse aux Meadows, and you are right, they are sunken.

I always assumed they had just sunk due to the ravages of time until I saw this post and your comment.
