What is Tinder, & What is Kindling?



Please note that what I am talking about here is traditional materials, materials used in the making of fire with Flint, Steel & Tinderbox. ( I am NOT in any way referring to materials used in the making of fire using the modern ferocerium rod ).


TINDER.


Tinder is a plant material that will catch & hold a spark from flint & steel. It can also be used to transfer an ember from the fire-board of a fire-bow. The dust created during the function of a fire-bow is also tinder.

KINDLING.


Kindling is the material that actually takes fire when brought in contact with smouldering tinder. Dried grass, teased Stringybark bark, coconut fibre, teased natural rope, a birds nest made of fine natural materials often including the aforementioned plant materials. Kindling is also small twigs & sticks used in the initial making of fire.


The so called “tinder nest” is NOT tinder in the true sense of the word, it is kindling. Fat wood is NOT tinder in the true sense of the word, it is kindling. Neither of these plant materials will catch & hold a spark struck from flint & steel.

No requirement for groups/clubs to issue photo ID - a membership card will now suffice as long as members also carry their own photo ID, such as driver's licence or passport.



No waiting period (for purchasing weapons) will apply to new members who hold any category of firearms licence (previously a 28 day waiting period was proposed for holders of some firearms licences)


Persons who have obtained a Chief Commissioner's individual approval under section 8C, a firearms licence, or a private security licence will not be required to undergo a Criminal History Check since they will have fulfilled this requirement already to obtain their approval/licence.


Groups/clubs are to notify DOJ when a member is deemed to be unsuitable for continued membership or a member has resigned (an email or a phone call will be sufficient).


The exemptions will now apply for 5 years (increased from the 3 years originally proposed).

Oxen power returns to small farms.

I read a while back that small farms in England are going back to using horses & oxen instead of tractors. Now it seems that fuel prices have gone so high in America that it is less expensive to feed oxen than it is to run a tractor, so small farms in the US are also returning to oxen power.

His whole worldly wealth, which had no shelter but the overhanging

Girty Found Flint At Hanging Rock in New England.

Girty Found Flint At Hanging Rock! (Oh what a great title!)


A friend & fellow group member Girty made a trek to Hanging Rock to look for flint & found some! Hanging Rock is about 100 klms from Armidale New England NSW where I live, & close to Ebor & Tamworth. Hanging Rock village used to be a gold mining town in the 19th century.

This is the image Girty sent me. It looks a lot like quartz, but hard to tell from this image. Gold is found with quartz though so it is possible. Girty though assures me that it strikes sparks well from a steel. I look forward to getting a closer look at this when Girty next visits.
