18TH CENTURY LIVING HISTORY, HISTORICAL TREKKING, AND LONG TERM SURVIVAL.
This is only vaguely related to your post, but I long ago learned that if you want to follow trails in the woods, use an old barn lantern held comfortably down at your side. It will show every little irregularity of the land within the lantern's reach. Held high, the effect is less noticable, though it still beats the over-illumination and "bleaching" of the area by a flashlight.
I found the lantern good providing it had a good top and kept the light away from me and onto the ground.
