You are welcome Karl, it is a good post. I happen to think that primitive methods & skills will teach one how to imprivise, adapt & overcome a lot better than modern methods. Just my opinion, but as an example, I think using a ferrocium rod will only teach you how to use a ferrocium rod, but a primitive method will teach you a lot more.

The ferro rod has certainly changed how we light a fire in the woods, and as a point to begin understanding how spark based fire works, it's good, once you get the birds nest down pat and blowing it to flame in a reliable manner, it is then easier to learn the colder spark methods, IMHO... however, going primitive first will give better confidance to a neophite woodsman...
