Gun Cleaning. A personal Point Of View.

This post has been prompted by several posts on forums concerning the problems people are having with gun cleaning. Principally the cleaning of the barrel.

All of the problems I have read about to date, to my thinking, seems to come from the use of modern cleaning agents & solvents. I fail to see why anyone would bother to try & fix something that is not broken! A method that has been working for over 300 years, but it seems that muzzle-loader users are getting lazy; they don't want to use the old tried & true methods because it seems too arduous & time consuming. So they turn to simpler quicker methods.

Some facts: When you oil the bore of your gun, pistol or rifle, the barrel absorbs some of that oil. If you use a modern solvent or cleaning product it will remove that oil from your barrel. Then you will have to purchase some other modern product that promises to stop your barrel rusting after you have cleaned it!

The best method is the oldest method, clean your barrel & lock with boiling water, dry the barrel with cloth or some other natural plant fibre. If I have a fire going I usually let the barrel stand where it will warm but not get too hot. Next, using a natural plant fibre again I oil the barrel & lock with sweet oil or neetsfoot oil. Job done. If you are seeing signs of black on your cleaning cloth, then you have not washed the barrel sufficiently. DO IT AGAIN! If you are getting signs of rust on your cleaning material, it can be because the wash water was not hot enough, or you did not dry the bore sufficiently. Keep running oiled material down the bore with your ramrod or cleaning rod until the bore is clean.

There is such a product as water soluble engineers oil, my Father called it "Pigeon's milk"! This product is what my Father told me to use when cleaning the barrels on my guns, this is what he used on his guns. The same method was used as in these videos, but the water soluble oil was added to the wash water, just a small amount. I have not used this oil since I was a lad, but it worked well back then. If it is the right oil, it will turn white in contact with the water.

Black Powder Firearms Laws In Poland Vs Australia.


Here in Australia we have to have a Firearms licence & pass a firearms test to obtain that licence. A permit to purchase, & we have to register all guns including replica muzzle-loading guns. A replica muzzle-loading gun is the same as an identical antique muzzle-loading gun, no difference. It still loads from the muzzle, it still relies on a flint lock for ignition. But in Poland, which has the most stringent firearms laws in the world, you do not require a permit to purchase, a licence or registration. Only the gunpowder needs to be registered.

- BLACK POWDER FIREARMS IN POLAND:
Blackpowder not integrated cartridge guns, if manufactured before 1885, and their replicas also multiple shot revolvers (separable loading only) are available without any restrictions (Owner must to be over 18). They are also permitted to be owned, used, and carried (You name it) loaded without any permits. Curiously though, the purchase of the blackpowder requires registration.

My Flintlock Won't Fire. Problem Solving.

My Flintlock Won’t Fire!
My hammer/steel is not sparking.
Checks: Has your gun flint got a sharp edge?
Is the flint held securely in the jaws of the cock with either leather or sheet lead?
 Is your gun flint striking the hammer/steel about two thirds of the way up the steel? If it is striking too high or too low on the face of the steel, then try turning the flint over.
Other possible causes of not sparking are: A weak mainspring or a weak feather spring. The steel may be too soft or too hard. The rear lock retaining screw may be too long and; putting pressure on the cock.
Solutions: Replace the spring. Replace the steel/hammer. You could try a file on the edge of your hammer/steel to see if it is hard or soft. If it files easily then it is too soft and needs to be replaced or re hardened. To re harden, heat to cherry red and quench in room temperature water.
If the steel/hammer is too hard, then it needs annealing (made softer). To do this, heat to cherry red and cool slowly. When it is cool you can try it and; see if it will spark. The steel may now be too soft to spark. If it will not spark, repeat the process by heating to cherry red & then quench in room temperature water. Slacken off the rear lock plate retaining screw and see if the hammer moves more freely. If it does, remove the screw, screw on a correct sized nut, file a little from the length of the screw. Take off the nut & try the screw in the lock plate. Repeat if the screw is still too long.
My flintlock is sparking, but it is shattering gun flints.
Checks: Your mainspring may be too strong, or the feather spring may be too strong. Make sure your steel/hammer tail moves freely on the feather spring and is (a) not tight on its pivot screw, and (b) has no lumps or rough spots on the tail where it moves over the feather spring.

Solutions: Replace springs. Free up the hammer/steel on the pivot screw if it is too tight. Use a whet stone to smooth rough or lumpy areas on the tail where it moves over the feather spring.
The priming is igniting but not firing the main charge.
Checks: None ignition; The vent in the barrel has been drilled into the breech plug, or the breech plug is covering the vent.
Solution: Check with a thin wire to find the direction in which the vent has been drilled & to see if it goes right through into the barrel. On my fusil I found that the vent was partially blocked by the breech plug. To remedy this I drilled through the vent with a slightly larger drill bit at an angle away from the breech plug. Then I used a countersink bit in the entrance of the vent. I suggest that you do not use a drill bit any larger than 1/8th”.
Slow ignition: 1) Check above solution 2) the vent hole may be too small 3) the vent hole may be filling with gunpowder 4) the vent hole may have been drilled too high. The vent should be level with the top of the pan.
Solution: 1) check the solutions above 2) try using a countersink bit to widen the vent entrance 3) you may need to drill out the vent with a slightly larger drill bit 4) you can use a vent quill when loading to keep the vent clear 5) you can clear the vent with your pricker before priming 6) don’t use too much priming, you only need a small amount in the pan.7) if the vent has been drilled too high, you can either tap the vent and screw a plug in and then drill a new vent hole, or you could try just widening the entrance with a countersink bit. The other alternative is to take it to a gunsmith and have him install a vent liner.

Tips for good ignition:
1.      After firing and before reloading, brush out the burnt residue from the pan if you plan to be leaving your gun loaded for a while.
2.    Use your pricker to clear the vent before priming, or, place a vent quill in the vent before loading.
3.    Make sure your gun flint has a sharp edge. If the edge is dull, either knap it or change the flint for a new one.
4.   Each time you discharge your gun, give the hammer/steel face a quick wipe to keep it clean.
5.    In damp weather use a cow’s knee leather lock cover.
6.   If it is raining, grease the edges of the pan to keep the wet out & grease between hammer/steel & barrel. Use a greased leather lock cover.
7.    Don’t overfill the pan when priming, only a small amount of gunpowder is required.

Please Note: If the gun is loaded, make sure it is pointed in a safe direction before attempting to knap the gun flint. It is highly unlikely to cause a spark and fire the gun, but better safe than sorry.

George Edie, A Treatise on English Shooting (London 1772) (7-8) "When a person is master of a good Piece, the keeping it in proper order is a main article in the doing execution with it: it is necessary the inside of the barrel, the touch-hole, and the lock, be kept clean; and the springs and moving parts of the lock properly oiled. The barrel should be washed at least after every eighteen or twenty fires, where the best sort of powder is used; but if the gun-powder is an inferior sort, then the barrel will require oftener washing. The best method of washing a barrel is, by taking out the britchpin; but as this can seldom be conveniently done, take the barrel out of the stock, and put the britch- end in to a pail of warm water, leaving the touch-hole open; then, with an iron rod, with tow or a bit of linen rag at the end, draw up and down in the syringe manner, till it is quite clean; changing the water, and rinsing the inside, as the foulness requires: when this is done, it will be proper to put in a red-hot iron, of six or eight inches in length (which any blacksmith will furnish), and move it up and down to dry any remaining damp: the outside of the barrel should be well dried, and a little oil rubbed over every time of cleaning." ________________

After every firing day the barrel is to be washed, by taking it out of the stock, and putting the breeching into water, leaving the touch hole open: then with an iron ram-rod and worm, with a piece of tow or rag, draw up and down the barrel till it becomes quite clean; when dry, rub it out with another piece of dry rag, and the outside of the barrel with buff leather. The lock not to be taken to pieces but when necessity requires it – and that is, when the trigger or hammer goes stiff, or sounds unpleasant to the ear.”

An Update of small shot for Smoothbores.



My last findings during researching lead shot had me puzzled. In George Washington's list of goods he ordered "Drop Shot". This was prior to the invention of the shot tower. Further searching has turned up a couple of interesting facts. (1) Prince Rupert's shot maker, & (2) Prince Rupert's experiment with glass. Prince Rupert melted glass & dropped some into a bucket of water, the result was known as Rupert's Drop. This glass droplet reminds me of the shape of a swan, & it made me wonder if there was any connection between this glass "drop" & the wrongly assumed shape of swan shot?!
It also made me wonder if the term "Rupert's Drop" had anything to do with the term "Drop Shot" used by George Washington. Certainly the method used in making "Rupert's Shot" could be termed "Drop Shot". Here then below is the information I have collected to date, I hope you find it of some interest & perhaps of use.

Rupert shot is frequently found at Michilimackinac…Some of this shot still has tails, indicating that it was possibly run at the fort,”

He also invented an improved method for manufacturing shot of varying sizes in 1663, that was later retained by the scientist Robert Hooke, one of Rupert's Royal Society friends during the period.[171]
The one great breakthrough in the history of shot making came in 1782, when a British plumber, William Watts of Bristol, received a patent for a method to produce shot…
Good old WW was a Bristol plumber and in 1782 he discovered a way of making perfect lead shot.
In 1782 an English plumber named William Watts saw possibility in that. He realized that if he dropped molten lead far enough through the air, it, too, would form into spheres. The surface tension of lead is a lot higher than that of water, so it forms very perfect spheres indeed.

The above comment relates to drops of molten glass, but of course the same man, Prince Rupert also designed the first Drop Shot by pouring molten lead through a sieve into a bucket of water. This could explain Washington’s use of the term Drop Shot before the shot tower was invented.

Lead shot was also found at the house sites in various sizes, and of three basic manufacturing types. Rupert’s shot, which was typically purchased, was made by pouring melted lead, fluxed with arsenic, through a colander into tubs of water. The size of the holes in the colander determined the size of the shot. Rupert’s shot has a small characteristic dimple on it. Like fish hooks, lead shot was not sold with number sizes as it is today, but with names corresponding to their intended game. In 18th-century Connecticut, merchants typically advertised such shot types as “bird,” “duck,” “geese” and “swan.” Some hunters made their own shot, which they cast into specially-made shot molds called gang molds. The molds were manufactured from brass or were homemade, carved out of local soapstone (steatite). Shot was also produced by a laborious process which involved pounding lead into long rectangular blanks and then cutting off small cubes of the desired shot size. The edges of this type of “tumbled shot” were then rounded by rolling them in sand or ash.25

 A final activity related to firearms was the production of shot and musketballs. Judging from the accumulation of sprue in the workshop refuse, the majority of early shot was laboriously cast in gang molds (Figure I8g-1). Rupert shot was also present, though in lesser quantities (Figure 18a-f). The two types can usually be distinguiished by the seam and cut-off marks on the cast shot, and the dimple characteristic of the Rupert process (Hamilton 1980: 13 1-133). This latter form was made by dropping lead through a heated colander into a pan of water immediately below. The shot was then graded by sieving (Brown 1980:84). Whether the Rupert shot was made on the site has not been determined, but the size distributions of the two are roughly similar, and indicate that they were functionally interchangeable (Figure 19). Apparently at least three or four sizes of shot were used at the fort, but the smallest size, at 5 mm was the most popular, probably for fowling pieces. A reversal in the relative popularity of shot types occurs in all areas away from the workshop, particularly the paving of the gateway outside the guard house, indicating either that Rupert shot was not made at the workshop, or that it replaced cast shot in Pentagoet 111 (Figure 20). Within buildings, of course, all exposed Pentagoet I11 shot was melted in the destruction of the fort.

Take Lead out of the Pig what quantity you please, melt it down, stir and clear it with an iron Ladle, gathering together the blackish parts that swim at top like scum, and when you see the colour of the clear Lead to be greenish, but no sooner, strew upon it Auripigmentum powdered according to the quantity of Lead, about as much as will lye upon a half Crown piece will serve for eighteen or twenty pound weight of some sorts of Lead; others will require more, or less. After the Auripigmentum is put in, stir the Lead well, and the Auripigmentum will flame: when the flame is over, take out some of the Lead in a Ladle having a lip or notch in the brim for convenient pouring out of the Lead, and being well warmed amongst the melted Lead, and with a stick make some single drops of Lead trickle out of the Ladle into water in a Glass, which if they fall to be round and without tails, there is Auripigmentum enough put in, and the temper of the heat is right, otherwise put in more. Then lay two bars of Iron (or some more proper Iron-tool made on purpose) upon a Pail of water, and place upon them a round Plate of Copper, of the size and figure of an ordinary large Pewter or Silver Trencher, the hollow whereof is to be about three inches over, the bottom lower then the brims about half an inch, pierced with thirty, forty, or more small holes; the smaller the holes are, the smaller the shot will be; and the brim is to be thicker then the bottom, to conserve the heat the better.
The bottom of the Trencher being some four inches distant from the water in the Pail, lay upon it some burning Coles, to keep the Lead melted upon it. Then with the hot Ladle take Lead off the Pot where it stands melted, and pour it softly upon the burning Coles over the bottom of the Trencher, and it will immediately run through the holes into the water in small round drops. Thus pour on new Lead still as fast as it runs through the Trencher till all be done; blowing now and then the Coles with hand-Bellows, when the Lead in the Trencher cools so as to stop from running.
While one pours on the Lead, another must, with another Ladle, thrusted four or five inches under water in the Pail, catch from time to time some of the shot, as it drops down, to see the size of it, and whether there be any faults in it. The greatest care is to keep the Lead upon the Trencher in the right degree of heat; if it be too cool, it will not run through the Trencher, though it stand melted upon it; and this is to be helped by blowing the Coals a little, or pouring on new Lead that is hotter: but the cooler the Lead, the larger the Shot; and the hotter, the smaller; when it it too hot, the drops will crack and fly; then you must stop pouring on new Lead, and let it cool; and so long as you observe the right temper of the heat, the Lead will constantly drop into very round Shot, without so much as one with a tail in many pounds.
When all is done, take your Shot out of the Pail of water, and put it in a Frying-pan over the fire to dry them, which must be done warily, still shaking them that they melt not; and when they are dry you may separate the small from the great, in Pearl Sives made of Copper or Lattin let into one another, into as many sizes at you please. But if you would have your Shot larger then the Trencher makes them, you may do it with a Stick, making them trickle out of the Ladle, as hath been said.
If the Trencher be but toucht a very little when the Lead stops from going through it, and be not too cool, it will drop again, but it better not to touch it at all. At the melting of the Lead take care that there be no kind of Oyl, Grease, or the like, upon the Pots, or Ladles, or Trencher.
The Chief cause of this Globular Figure of the Shot, seems to be the Auripigmentum; for, as soon as it is put in among the melted Lead, it loses its shining brightness, contracting instantly a grayish film or skin upon it, when you scum it to make it clean with the Ladle. So that when the Air comes at the falling drop of the melted Lead, that skin constricts them every where equally: but upon what account, and whether this be the true cause, is left to further disquisition.

This is an image of a hunter shooting ducks on the water, using what was called a "stalking horse". The stalking horse was used as a moving blind so the hunter could move closer to the game.

The above I suspect is swan shot. It is about the same size that I make myself for use in my fusil & pistol, about 5/16 th of an inch.

Shot was the term used for any made ammunition fired from a muzzle-loading gun or cannon. What we are concerned with in this article is the shot commonly known as "swan-shot" & "goose-shot". During my research I have come across much misinformation, & other information that I think is suspect & which has no references to back up the claim.
The first "shot tower" was invented & patented by William Watts in 1782, so before that date, there must have been other method/s of producing shot for fowling purposes. All evidence so far points to the use of moulds, as sprues have been found, & only moulding produces such sprues. However, this is not to say that rough shot was not made from hammering out lead ball & cutting pieces of lead from the resulting small sheet of lead. This method certainly works as I have done it myself & would be a suitable method to use in the wilderness if there were a need.

I must also make it clear that the terms "swan shot" & "goose shot" refer to the size of the shot, not the appearance, or the method of production. The shot available at the time recieved the name of the particular animal for which it was best suited.

During the early years of the colony each Englishman who planned to
emigrate to Virginia was advised to supply himself with the following
"Armes":

    "One Armour compleat, light.
    One long Peece, five foot or five and a halfe, neere
      Musket bore.
    One sword.
    One bandaleere [a bandoleer was a belt worn to carry the
      cases which held the powder charges].
    Twenty pound of powder.
    Sixty pound of shot or lead, Pistoll and Goose shot."

Contemporary records indicate that hunting game birds and animals was a
popular New World diversion. Such sport served a twofold purpose, as it
offered recreation to the settler and helped provide food for his table.
Parts of early fowling pieces and numerous lead birdshot (called goose
or swan shot during the early years of the 17th century) have been
recovered.
In the ash and burned soil of this hearth area, lead casting sprues for swan shot were found,
“every one shall be completely furnished with arms, a musket, a sword, bandoleers, a rest, a pound of powder, 20 bullets fitted to their musket, or 4 pound of pistol shot or swan shot at least.”101

Hammered Slug Probably the most common slug is that created from normal lead balls, which were modified by hammering to substantially reduce their caliber. The final shape, whether square, hexagonal or round in section depends on the number of times they were hammered. The length of a slug is irrelevant to the function of the bullet, being determined simply by the caliber of the original ball and the intended final caliber. The caliber of the original bullet can be determined by the weight.

The dropped shot ranged from 0.22 to 0.71 inches (5.54 to 17.94mm). The cast shot ranged from 0.22 to 0.71 inches (5.54 to 17.94mm).

More on that Pistol Stock Design.

Searching for more information on the pistol that I purchased, I have been concentrating on the design of the stock.  Here are another two stocks of the same design as mine both dating early to mid 18th century.

I have used leather wads for many years now, using my Father’s old 20 gauge wad punch. I started using leather wads not because of some historical documentation, but because it seemed the common sense and practicle thing to do. Leather will not take fire and be a danger in dry weather. Then recently I found this 18th century poem. It says in part:
PTERYPLEGIA:
Or, the art of
SHOOTING-FLYING. 1767.
Now fearch for Tow, and fome old Saddle
pierce.
No Wadding lies fo clofe, or drives fo fierce.

Old Saddle Pierce? This had me foxed for a while, and then I realised that this being a poem, it may not necessarily refer to an item per se but more of a procedure or action. So I searched the dictionary for the word “pierce”, and this in part is what I got:
Pierced. Piercing.
1.    to penetrate (something), as a pointed object does.
2.   to make a hole or opening in; perforate.
3.   To make (a hole or opening) by or as if by boring or perforating.

From this I deduct that “old saddle pierce” is most likely to be the cutting of leather wads from old saddle leather.
