18th Century Flip Recipe.


Flip Recipe.

• 3 eggs
• 3 teaspoons sugar
• 1 jigger rum
• 1 jigger brandy
• 1 red-hot flip iron or poker heated in fireplace
• tall, all-pewter mug
• 12-16 ounces of beer


1. In a quart mug break three eggs
2. Add three teaspoons sugar and stir well
3. Add in the jigger of rum and the jigger of brandy, beating meanwhile.
4. Fill remaining volume of mug with beer
5. Insert red-hot iron until it hisses and foams.
6. The drink will become only warm.

  1. Now that sounds li8ke something worth trying, at least once, before you die!...How much is a jigger though ;-) Wouldn't want too big a jigger or two, would we :-)

  2. Hi Joel. A jigger is roughly your standard shot, about one & a half ounces, but some say it varies from 1-2 ounces. If you have one of those double shot measures, a jigger is said also to be either end.
    Just to make sure perhaps you should add one from each end!

  6. Thanks for posting this, I actually saw your post asking what a flip-can was (I believe it was you). This led to all kinds of searching and figuring out how to make flip and saw images of flip-cans. Then In search results I saw a link to what you posted here. Very informative, thank you.
