Talking about research, there is plenty of primary documentation on people not shaving in the early to mid 18th century. As far as not being the norm, & flooding reenactment events with over representation of Indian influenced woodsmen & the like, I think everyone has the right to be what ever they want to be. If there is documentation that a certain persona existed, then that is good enough. We only read about a small percentage of woodsmen & woods-women that existed, there must have been many more that simply did not survive or made it into the history books.
