Salmon fishing on the river during the spawning run. The two sticks on either side of the net would come together when a fish hit the net trapping it. Pretty ingenious actually.

P.S. Keith, the correct spelling is actually Hoopa. The Hoopa Reservation, which is the largest reservation in California, is about a 2 hour drive from here. Not that far by air miles, but it is on the other side of the Marble Mountain Wilderness Area from here.
