I recall reading somewhere that in the New World, Indians often made sneak attacks on such tanneries to steal the tanned leather.

  1. I doubt if our EPA would let a small tannery like that survive in this country. I hope that one lives on a long time.

  2. You are probably right. Though I wonder sometimes at the things that are allowed or ignored, the things people get away with. Factories & other industrial sites are getting away with massive polution, but people in town are not allowed to close down their fires at night because they smoke more! We are talking wood smoke here, not coal.
    Like you, I like to see these old small industries surviving.
